Polished, precise and hauntingly vulnerable, Melbourne alternative dynamos Yours Truly have transformed their previous trademark pop punk style into a brand new sonic chapter via their brand new EP ‘is this what i look like?’, officially out today via UNFD.
Armed with raw honesty and heightened influences, the journey towards the new EP was never intended to mark an ambitious step forward for the quartet, initially planned as a three-track companion to their breakout 2020 debut album ‘Self Care’. But while ‘is this what i look like?’ still explores moments of pop punk and introspection, the end result is an amalgamation of a band ready to explore beyond their preexisting sonic universe, embracing organic yet unexpected new sounds and thematic exploration emerging with seven songs that unpack uncertainty and self exploration alongside heightened rock, emo and dance-ready sparkle woven into the established Yours Truly DNA.
To celebrate the new EP, the band have also today unveiled an accompanying music video for the recent single Careless Kind, with the potent anthem perfectly complemented by the pink-hued clip and emphatic performances from the entire band.
Of the making behind the raw yet vigorous anthem that is Careless Kind, Yours Truly vocalist Mikaila Delgado shares: “I wrote Careless Kind after talking to a friend about my anxieties and listening to how chill they were about everything. I remember thinking, ‘I wish I could be like them, see things in black and white and not overthink absolutely everything.’ It tackles a lot of my health and social anxiety and how I feel like it constantly takes over my ability to be carefree because I’m always thinking ‘what if?’. Everything down to the scars on my ankles from an operation I had when I was young, which was where a lot of my self-consciousness began. It’s wishing I could reset my thoughts and remove the anxiety.”
With their previous album 2020 ‘Self Care’ scooping up an ARIA nomination for Best Hard Rock/heavy album, Yours Truly‘s brand new EP ‘is this what i look like?’ once again champions honesty like its predecessor, while also embracing more recent influences for the band internally, looking to the likes of Bring Me The Horizon, Bloc Party, The 1975, Head Automatica and beyond to grow their previously-established pop punk sound into more assured and eclectic waters.
From working alongside their childhood heroes, with You Me At Six‘s Josh Franceschi appearing on the punchy Hallucinate, to drawing inspiration from adventure video games like Life Is Strange, Detroit: Become Human and Cloudpunk, ‘is this what i look like?’ is an authentic and powerful meeting point for the human condition; one laden with documented hurdles and dazzling songwriting, while also a true reflection that it’s OK to not have all the answers as you go. And for vocalist Mikaila Delgado, the EP’s ultimate goals are fused with catharsis and connectivity.
“It’s called ‘is this what i look like?’ because after making it, I have a better understanding of myself,” Delgado explains. “Being honest in lyrics is a huge source of therapy for me though. If something is bothering me, writing about it usually makes me feel better. I don’t mind people hearing my deepest, darkest secrets if there’s a chance it makes them feel less alone. I hope it’s relatable. I hope people see themselves in these songs.”
Boasting appearances in 2022 alone onstage at UNIFY and Slam Dunk Festival, Yours Truly have also this year played alongside Against The Current, Rise Against and at various shows in the UK. Yours Truly will join I Prevail, Pierce The Veil and Fit For A King for an absolutely stacked American tour throughout September and October, before the band embark on their national Australian headline tour armed with their stunning new EP, kicking off on Thursday 24 November on the Gold Coast before closing out in Launceston on Sunday 18 December.
