JON MARSDEN Channels Retro Soul On His New Track ‘Mirror’

“Combining catchy guitar riffs and a charismatic vocal tone, Marsden’s sound seemed effortless as it drifted between jazzy intro and funky rhythms. Marsden’s performance was a psychedelic journey…”

It’s not often that one comes across an artist as uniquely multifaceted as Brisbane based singer-songwriter, producer, and multi-instrumentalist Jon Marsden. Jon fuses introspective lyrical song writing with eclectic rhythm and groove to deliver a deep and engaging performance. Written during the 2020 pandemic, his latest single Mirror takes inspiration from 70’s soul, RnB and psychedelia and was out on September 24. The single’s already received love from the links of Unearthed radio, with much more to come.

The tune was recorded and produced in Brisbane, at the artist’s small home studio. All recording, mixing, mastering and production were done by Jon. Equally impressive is that the multi-instrumentalist tracked all instruments on Mirror, being electric and acoustic guitars, bass, keyboard, drums, and flute.

On the new tune, Jon takes a contemplative approach to songwriting. Mirror talks about uncertainty and change as well as dealing with imposter syndrome as a creative, as he explains it, “I believe that I’m being a lot more honest about my approach to songwriting, musically and lyrically. The themes that I’ve been writing about have been much more introspective and hit topics that are closer to home, ‘Mirror’ is a great example of that.”

“This song is one of the many written throughout the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020 and 2021. I wrote and produced a demo song almost every day for a year with no intent to release any of them. It wasn’t until recently that I spent some time looking through the catalogue I had written and picked out a few that I would really love to perform live. I felt that ‘Mirror’ best encapsulates and sets the tone for the music to come.”

Performing since the young age of 14, Jon has had the opportunity to cultivate his skills in the live setting to create an immersive show. Accompanied by backing band, Jon has opened for artists such as SYCCO, Katie Baker, STUMPS, TOWNS and Sahara Beck at the Foundry for her Brisbane leg of 2019’s ‘Queen Of Hearts Tour.’
