SARAH SAINT JAMES Teams Up With ALEX LAHEY On Pop-Punk Anthem ‘Heather’

“We cannot wait to hear what she does next” – Purple Sneakers

“One of the breakthrough artists to pay serious attention to in 2021” – Women In Pop

Sarah Saint James lets her inner boss bitch shine on new pop-punk anthem Heather, her new single out today, co-written with alt-rocker Alex Lahey.

Uncompromising and unapologetic, Heather channels the nostalgia of 2000s emo, brimming with energy and attitude plus a huge singalong chorus. Inspired by the iconic teen comedy Heathers, the track reflects on Sarah’s own high school hell, a volatile time when she was ostracised by the popular clique for her differences and bullied relentlessly because of her sexuality and dress size, “Everyday is a nightmare… Go on sink your teeth into my skin”.

Heather revisits a particularly vulnerable time as a teenager in 2009 when Sarah was critically ill in hospital and simultaneously abandoned by her dad. One of her ‘best friends’ spread a nasty rumour about her, resulting in losing her small group of friends and leaving her to feel completely alone and disconnected from the world. ‘The Heathers’ around Sarah set out to destroy her life out of jealousy and bitterness, however the song is written with hindsight and self-awareness and Sarah explains “It’s not about revenge… I actually feel sorry for her, because no matter what she did, she would never be okay within herself, and nothing she did put me six feet under”.

Written, recorded and played by three queer women – Sarah, Alex and Jess EllwoodHeather is the antithesis to everything The Heathers represent. Instead it spotlights the woman who went on to define herself outside of those high school walls and beyond the expectations of her peers: her inner teen has been liberated, her queerness has been celebrated, she knows her worth extends beyond her body, and she is a model of living your truth. Sarah Saint James has arrived and is standing in her power, “You can take it out on me and I’ll go out and live your wildest dreams.”

Heather follows the viral success of Sarah Saint James’ previous single mad at god, which was released earlier in 2021 and has gone on to amass 2 million streams and 1.5 million+ views from user generated content after it exploded on TikTok. Sarah has received airplay on The Edge 96.1KIIS 106.5 and triple j, as well as community stations FBi Radio and Radio Adelaide, building a community of 35,000 social media followers around her in the process. Her monthly Spotify listeners exceed an audience of 42,000 while her daily Apple Music listeners average 500+.
