MoonDoll Festival Q&A Series: PhD!

Words/Interview: Shannon-Lee Sloane {The Colourful Writer}

With MoonDoll Music Festival just around the corner, we’ve taken some time to swing some messages to some of the bands and artists on the bill to ask them about the upcoming event and live music festivals in general, as well as some other questions to get to know them a little better! Next up we have Brisbane Punkers, PhD! – answers by Sydney (Vocals), Matt (Guitar) and Liam (Bass)

How excited are you to play MoonDoll Festival this year?

Matt: Honestly, I dont get excited about much, but if I had to put a value to it, about 9 out of 10. This will be the first festival I’ve ever attended let alone played, and for it to be the first festival we’ve played as a band, that’s pretty special for me.

How crazy do you think I am for putting on a music festival in 2021?

Liam: Some people would say that you are crazy, some would say you are foolish, some brave….. but we prefer the term badass.

How do you feel about music festivals in general?

Liam: I love them! There’s no better way to discover new music then at festivals, and the way that a band performs live is super interesting to me.

What is the best music festival you’ve ever been to? Name the festival, the year, and the highlights of the event!

Sydney: I’ve only ever been to one, which was Good Things in 2019, and it was pretty amazing. The main highlight was seeing Bad Religion, a band I grew up listening to with my parents, it was really rad being able to be at the barrier for that.

If you could play a festival with any band or artist in the whole world, who would it be and why?

Matt: I’m gonna break the rules and go with 2 bands, which would have to be either Dear Seattle or Foo Fighters. Both bands hold a special place in my heart and have helped me through a lot of tough times in my life

If you could create your own all star line up for a huge music festival, who would be your top five headlining bands?

Sydney: Honestly all throwback emo stuff, I’m such a sucker for it. I’d probably go with My Chemical Romance at the top, my absolute favourite band. Then Pierce the Veil, Fall Out Boy, Can’t Swim, and Bring Me The Horizon.

Who are you most excited to see at MoonDoll this year?

Liam: Mitch, Please

Who would you like to see on MoonDoll next year?

Liam: Mitch, Please again! but if you meant a band that isn’t already on the lineup then I would have to say Ghost College! They are an awesome 3 piece band from Brisvegas and their Bassist/Singer Era is an absolute weapon on bass.

If you/your band was asked to include one cover song in your set, what song would you choose and why?

Matt: Would have to be Boy Division by My Chemical Romance, it’s really the only cover we know right now, and the only one we’ve ever done really well.

How do you feel about mixed genre festivals and gigs?

Matt: I’m a big fan of rock and guitar driven music, so as long as the bands have guitars I’m there for it.

Who is your favourite local band?

Liam: Mitch, Please

Who is your favourite Australian band of all time?

Matt: Would have to be Dear Seattle.

If you could give your fans and followers words of wisdom or a motto, what would it be?

Sydney: Stick true to yourself, and be creative as much as you can. Even if you don’t think they’re any good, writing songs was the best outlet for when I was feeling my worst, it’s really important to be able to throw out all that negative energy in a safe and healthy way. Just be gentle with yourself. 🙂
