I OH YOU are thrilled to share the title track from Melbourne alt-rocker Hayley Mary’s sophomore EP ‘The Drip’, which will be released on Friday 18 June.

Accompanied by a stunning video directed by McLean StephensonThe Drip is a playful and upbeat guitar pop number with a darker narrative offering, that was pieced together while Hayley was living in Edinburgh and working in a small café.

Written as a collection of one-liner scribbles on napkins, the phrases or images that came to Hayley’s mind would quickly be noted down and tucked away for safe keeping. Upon returning to Australia, Hayley discovered a shoebox full of these ideas which ignited a drive to finish the song.

“I was sitting in the window at my tenement flat in Leith when the phrase, ‘it was a dirty grey day, there was a constant drizzle’. I knew there was a song in it, but it was not until a year or so later, back in Melbourne, that I found my shoebox of napkins. It sparked a nostalgia for Scotland and I began piecing them together and filling in the story and a romantic yet cynical, addiction riddled figure who I’d known in a lot of people, including myself, who was killing himself slowly in a mundane, everyday sort of way.

There was also a violent drip on my windowsill when it stormed, which haunted me in the night like the Raven of Edgar Allan Poe, and a leaking tap in the kitchen I just couldn’t seem to get around to fixing, that seemed to represent everything I was letting slip by. I’ll admit I don’t know entirely what the song is about, or whether it’s the ramblings of an optimist or a nihilist, but I think it’s my favourite of mine so far.”

The Drip follows previous singles The ChainWould You Throw A Diamond? and the recent Young & Stupid – Hayley’s first releases since her debut EP The Piss, The Perfume was released to critical acclaim last year. Together these singles have seen support from BACKSEATMAFIA, The Line of Best Fit, Paste, Idolator, NME, Gigwise, The Burning Ear, XS Noise and The Independent along with adds to triple j, Double J, Kink FM (Netherlands) and spins across Amazing Radio (UK) and XS Manchester. Hayley famously performed Lana Del Rey’s ‘Chemtrails Over The Country Club’ on triple j’s Like A Version earlier this year.

The Drip is a stunning example of Hayley’s undeniable talent for writing instant classics. Hayley’s highly anticipated second EP ‘The Drip’ is out in under a month.
