Having turned heads and earned comparisons to pop sensation Dua Lipa with her debut single Better, Melbourne-based artist COTTA has unveiled her newest effort, Didn’t Call – a showcase of the up-and-comer’s brand of infectious celestial indie pop.
The new release was inspired by a pandemic-induced communication mishap, COTTA explains:
“I’m in a long distance relationship with my very wonderful, very supportive boyfriend who lives back on the Gold Coast. Naturally, and particularly in a post-‘Rona world, time between visits can be tough! We try to FaceTime as much as possible to stay connected but he missed my call one night (through no fault of his, or his very old iPhone’s, own) and I started humming this melody. This is no diss track, by any means – I’m very much in love – but I thought it was a cute take on what can happen if your call goes unanswered.”
Didn’t Call was produced and mixed by Oldland in Brunswick East and follows on from COTTA’s performance at the AFL 2020 Grand Final and a sold out launch for the release of her 2020 single Better.
Boasting powerhouse vocals, poignant lyrics and clever and catchy hooks, COTTA is the latest project by young female composer Cassidy Mackie. Described as “the lovechild of the late 1980s and Maggie Rogers”, COTTA is known for her anthemic but moving releases detailing love, loss and life as she knows it. As she throws herself headfirst into a life of collaboration, electronic influence and bop territory, COTTA seeks to maintain authenticity through thoughtful lyrics and organic melodies, no matter the song. COTTA‘s single ‘Better’ dropped on February 5, 2021; a twist on the classic break-up song, with a focus on self-empowerment, which was followed by a sold out launch show. The release earned the newcomer broad praise from the triple j and Unearthed teams, with Abby Butler remarking “have we found Australia’s answer to Dua Lipa?” and Home & Hosed presenter Declan Byrne saying he’s “keen to hear more”. Now COTTA returns with follow up single Didn’t Call, with a promise of much more to come for the emerging talent throughout 2021.
