Delivering warming doses of soothing, humble folk, Brisbane singer-songwriter Jordan Merrick is back, adding a bluesy twist to his comforting sound with new single Lonelier Than You.

Since his debut in 2017, Merrick has been enthralling audiences with his intriguing folk-blend that incorporates handfuls of blues, rock and country. Releasing his debut album ‘Night Music’ in 2019, Merrick has been dishing out his collection of folk/roots tracks throughout 2020 as well as releasing cosy single This Rainy Day earlier in the year.

Now, Jordan Merrick delivers Lonelier Than You, a transfixing track overflowing with bluesy charm as a strong, steady beat backs layers of infectious electric guitar riffs and subtle bass lines. Merrick’s throaty tone follows a melodic rhythm over the instrumental, eventually reaching a desperate cry for help in a building crescendo, leaving only the distant whiff of blues club cigar smoke in its wake.

Using his flair for storytelling, Merrick wrote Lonelier Than You during the COVID-19 pandemic, exploring the desolate feelings of isolation and anxiety that can arise from the current overload of conspiracy theories and fake news. Merrick states:

Lonelier Than You was inspired by the conspiracy theories that were born from COVID-19. Like a wallflower, I watched on as people isolated themselves, jumping from theory to theory and ultimately ended up down a rabbit hole that’s incredibly hard to climb out of. While that is quite a serious can of worms to write about, I wanted to paint a picture from the perspective of an individual who – surrounded by the mass amounts of ‘alt’ news – starts to have doubts about everything and seeks solace. There’s levity, there’s Elon Musk, there’s the importance of truth. It’s a song I feel we can all relate to in one way, shape or form.

Merrick’s previous releases have seen support from Spotify ‘Gentle Acoustic’ playlist, Apple Music New Music Daily playlists, Triple J, Double J, ABC Radio, RAGE, MTV Australia, theMusic, Pilerats, AU Review, Rhythms Mag and community radio where he has landed in the AMRAP charts a number of times.

Demonstrating Merrick’s diverse genre range and talent for captivating songwriting, Lonelier Than You is out today – April 16.
