Rising singer-songwriter HALLIE returns today with new single Sydney Hates Me. Premiered on triple j, the track is an ode to missed opportunities and hilarious circumstances. Having honed her production skills over the past year, Hallie co-produced the sweet-toned song alongside Ali Richardson. She also produced and directed the one-shot theatrical lyric video in collaboration with director Zoe Hilditch, listen/watch HERE.
Of the release, Hallie shares: “This song is exactly what you think it’s about — Sydney hating me! I had 3 shows booked at the very beginning of this year (2020); One I travelled from Brissy to play and it was rained out 20 minutes before, the next got cancelled a couple of days out, and the last one was a flight cancellation. COVID 19 topped it off because it was confirmed there was no way I could get into Sydney.
The song sparked for me after realising someone I had a little crush on who lived in Syd had a thing for me too and was going to come to my show (before it was cancelled). I was feeling hella excited about a bit of COVID online love, and also dramatic about the uncertainty of if I would ever see them in person. I think at one time or another, we all had those dramatic moments of longing and lust over someone or something during COVID 19. The question everyone was asking and still is; will I EVER get close to you?”
Sydney Hates Me marks Hallie’s first offering in a year. Like many artists, 2020 put a serious dent in her plans to tour and release new music. Pre-Covid, she had planned to perform a string of headline dates and had locked in support slots with Didirri and San Cisco. Instead, she adapted and spent the year writing and teaching herself to produce. The result: a more empowered, self-assured artist ready to catapult into the year ahead.
The new track follows on from last year’s single Sympathy, which was added to spot rotation on triple j and won praise from Tone Deaf, MTV and Purple Sneakers, as well as Spotify and Apple Music. After winning the triple j Unearthed Bigsound Competition 2019, Hallie released her debut EP, ‘Wink Wink Nudge Nudge’ and went on to tour with Holy Holy and Charlie Collins, also playing shows with Stella Donnelly, Spacey Jane, Tyne-James Organ and more.
