Fresh indie tunes with catchy pop hooks are the signature style of emerging Brisbane artist Katanak.
2020 was not a year that a lot of people want to remember but for Katanak it was an important milestone in his career and 2021 looks set to start on a high note for the emerging indie pop artist from Brisbane.
Following on from his People’s Choice Award win at QUBE Effect 2020, Katanak wrote and produced the high energy Valentine recorded with Jared Adlam (Athena Joy, Hazel Mei, Girl and Girl) at his studios on the Gold Coast. While at first glance Valentine might be considered a love song, it’s actually about lost love. It’s about taking someone for granted and then once they are gone, realising they were the best part of your life.
Katanak says “Valentine has been a favourite at my live shows for some time now so it’s always been the song that people have asked when it will be released. Up till December I haven’t been able to get into the studio so the first opportunity that presented itself I took. Working with Jared was a dream and working with someone who is on the same wavelength just makes it so much easier. He knew exactly what I was looking for and I walked out that first day thinking ‘damn, that was good’.”
Katanak has caught the eye of LMSUKmedia from the UK, who work with artists at the grassroots level to grow their brand and will start working with them for the first time in 2021 with the goal of getting his music heard in the UK.
Combining the storytelling of The 1975, the anthemic nature of Circa Waves and the hooklines of The Wombats, Katanak is building a reputation for creating indie pop songs that get the crowd on their feet and moving to the groove.
After supporting Pete Murray on his 2019 Summer Sessions Tour, his following has continued to grow with his People’s Choice Award win at QUBE Effect 2020. With music “oozing the charm of a 90s boy band dipped in a delicious sugar-pop sound” (Music is my Muse), the young musician shows no sign of slowing down any time soon!
