Third Man Records Announce Signing of Natalie Bergman of brother-sister act Wild Belle, and New Album by Gories Guitarist Danny Kroha
Third Man Records had a busy 2020 and is starting 2021 with a bang by announcing both a new album by guitarist Danny Kroha, co-founding guitarist with seminal Detroit garage rock outfit The Gories, and the signing of Natalie Bergman, known to many as one half of brother-sister duo Wild Belle.
Official news of Natalie Bergman’s debut, self-produced solo album the album will be announced soon, but the album promises a spiritual healing perfectly-timed and much-needed in the wake of 2020’s devastation. Helmed by her heavenly voice, Bergman’s solo album is steeped in mystic melodies and time-bending tones of psychedelic rock and soul. Showcasing her multi-instrumental and creative versatility, songs will be accompanied by visuals that blend her own abstract artwork, self-designed wardrobe and beyond.
Bergman has shared the first preview with an occultish rendition of the unreleased I Will Praise You, performed live from a garden where she and her band sing through a series of restorative rituals.
“I Will Praise You is a song I wrote about perseverance during an unkind time,” says Bergman. “The message is inspired by traditional gospel music, the true source of rock & roll. I wrote and recorded this album on my own.”
On the signing of Natalie Bergman, Third Man Records co-founder Ben Swank adds, “Natalie has a unique vision and has approached this album with a reverence for the sacred and healing nature of the history of this music, but has managed to update it in a way that is distinctly her own. We’re very excited to welcome her to the Third Man label and family.”
Alongside her brother Elliot, the island-influenced music Natalie Bergman made in Wild Belle has led to collaborations ranging from Major Lazer to Tom Tom Club, performances at Coachella and Lollapalooza, tours with Beck, Cage The Elephant, Toro y Moi and more. Stay tuned for more news.
Danny Kroha, founding member along with Mick Collins (later of the Dirtbombs) of super-influential Detroit minimal garage rock trio The Gories, releases his sophomore solo album ‘Detroit Blues’ on February 5. The album is largely comprised of Kroha’s interpretations of traditional folk, blues and gospel songs from the public domain, created with an assortment of anachronistic DIY instruments like the one-string washtub bass, jug bass and The Diddley Bow. The album highlights Kroha’s own amalgamation of early blues and ‘60s folk, a new surreal sound that could really only happen in Detroit.
Third Man Records was launched by Jack White in Detroit, MI in 2001, and in 2009 opened its current Nashville, TN location, which houses a record store, novelties lounge (featuring the Third Man Record Booth), label offices and distribution center, photo studio, and the world’s only live venue with direct-to-acetate recording capabilities. Third Man Records returned to Detroit in November 2015 with its second physical location, Third Man Records Cass Corridor — record store, novelties lounge, in-store performance stage, record booth, and vinyl record pressing plant, which you can witness in action through viewing windows in the store, pressing the very records available for purchase. Third Man is an innovator in the world of vinyl records and a boundary pusher in the world of recorded music, aiming to bring tangibility and spontaneity back into the record business and issue releases that leave no doubt in the minds of listeners that music is indeed sacred.
2020 saw Third Man release new recordings by Brendon Benson, Luke Schneider, Heather Trost, North Americans, Alison Mossheart and others, reissues and archival material from The Stooges, Boris, Redd Kross, Albert Ayler, France Gall, Screamin’ Jay Hawkins, and more, books including a new edition of Robert Gordon’s classic It Came From Memphis, Live At Third Man recordings by the Hives, Starcrawler and others, and four issues of its new quarterly magazine Maggot Brain.
