NOT A BOYS NAME (aka Dave Jenkins Jr) today releases the self-directed music video for his latest single ‘Fuck It Up’ featuring (and co-staring) Bec Sandridge.
The treatment for the video came together fast, as Jenkins Jr dreamt up various situations in which he and Sandridge could act out the lyrics, while keeping things slightly surreal and avoiding anything too literal.
The result is a fast-paced, pop-art daydream involving a dog, a baby, broken CDs, death by water pistol and other jumpsuit clad weirdness.
Of the visual style Jenkins Jr says “I was inspired by the clips of DEVO, Talking Heads and early Prince. The kind of videos where they didn’t have a lot of budget..just a camera, some lights and a studio space. Filming against a white background meant that we literally had a blank canvas to throw our ideas at”.
While a lot of the ideas were dreamt up ahead of the shoot, a great deal of them were imagined on the day. Dave remarks “On the morning of the shoot, the DOP Kaillan Clay said that he was bringing his dog” Juggy I immediately had a vision of that old HMV image with the dog and the gramophone. I thought THIS HAS TO HAPPEN! So I stopped off at an electronics store and bought a megaphone. After some coaxing and a few treats (hidden in the megaphone) we got the shot we were after”.
The music video for Fuck It Up also stars Rosie Fitzgerald (I Know Leopard) who sings backings on the song, and English singer-songwriter Lucy Taylor (PAWWS) both of which have shared the stage with Jenkins Jr in the NOT A BOYS NAME live band over the years.
The moniker NOT A BOYS NAME is a reminder for Dave Jenkins JR. to create without concerning himself with the consequences and acts a way to avoid being pigeonholed – creatively or otherwise. “To me, it is about avoiding definition. I didn’t want my name to define me. Let the songs do that” says Dave.
Born in a sleepy coastal town outside of Sydney, Dave has spent his entire life involved with music in one way or another. His dad was a drummer, and he grew up around a tight-knit circle of friends who were obsessed with music and worshipped musicians like the Beatles and Nirvana. Dave spent much of his teen years tinkering away at demos and rough-cut recordings in his bedroom, where his love of DIY recording first took shape.
It wasn’t until Dave moved to Sydney that his musical ambitions were finally realised. A chance meeting with alternative-pop musician Andy Bull led to his first musical collaboration and from there, his career took off. To date, he has worked with beloved and acclaimed Australian musicians such as Daniel Johns, Vera Blue, Lisa Mitchell, Bertie Blackman, and Alex Cameron.
