Much loved Melbourne rock outfit Fan Girl have today returned with a brand new single and video, ‘backwards (everything is)’. Featuring the incredible vocals of Sydney musician Annie Hamilton, the new release delivers the band’s signature punch and charm, with a bright and warm tone shimmering throughout.
Known for their quirky and somewhat sonically dark discography, Fan Girl explain ‘backwards (everything is)’ was the result of a challenge “to write what some people might see as a “happy” sounding Fan Girl song, while still being a little wonky, broken and unhinged.”
“The punchy, sunny and erratic colours of the instrumental are contrasted with sleepy and dreamy lyrical imagery, and the lyrics thematically play with the idea of mourning a time, a place, a person, a greasy meal, a restful sleep, a feeling.”
“We were SUPER lucky to have the wonderful Annie Hamilton add her brilliant vocals to the track.”
‘backwards (everything is)’ was recorded at Taste Police HQ, the band’s studio in Brunswick, with mixing by Aaron Cupples and mastering by Bob Weston. The quirky music video was created by Rick Clifford (aka @rcstills).
The new single is just the start of more to come from the band in 2021, serving as their first single since the successes of last year’s releases ‘Fox Song’ and ‘Yellow, Blue & Grey’.
Fan Girl have gained support from press across the country, such as Tone Deaf, The Music, Beat and more, as well as spins from Triple J and community radio support nationwide. The band have supported the likes of Catfish & The Bottlemen, Birds of Tokyo, Ali Barter, Ecca Vandal and more, plus showcase appearances at BIGSOUND in 2019. Earlier in the year, Fan Girl played shows in Melbourne, Sydney and Wollongong.
Tragically, as they were celebrating the release of their debut album, ‘Elephant’ Room in 2018, founding member Jack Wood passed away, and understandably, the band went into an indefinite hiatus, taking some well earned time to regroup. They’re picking up the pieces and have well and truly returned. Their urgent, explosive live shows are back, coupled with exhilarating new music, and a newfound appreciation for each other, life, & obnoxious guitar music.
