A melodic, instrumentally aggressive track filled with heavy basslines and anthemic hooks, Bluelight is an exploration of socioeconomic themes and the effects sensationalist media has on young audiences.
“Bluelight discusses the effect sensationalist and oversaturated media has on the young mind. We’ve put it into a metaphor, where the consumer is practically talking to the article as if the media was personified. This opens an opportunity for the listener to apply their own experiences to the narrative while maintaining a clear point; journalism and politics have regressed into an opinionated, subjective form, skewing and manipulating our outlook in a toxic, contagious fashion,” explains vocalist, Callum Robinson.
A slight deviation from their previous work, Bluelight is a rigid, aggressive rock track that sits closer to neighbouring punk acts such as IDLES, with aims to resonate with a wider audience such as left-leaning, socially aware listeners. Callum continues to explain: “The track will also appeal to indie listeners because it’s is produced with more raw, energetic soundscapes using dry drums, distorted guitars, gang vocals and a hint of synth.”
The band have been keeping busy the past year and are quickly gaining notoriety as front runners in the Australian punk rock scene. Previously dubbed a triple j unearthed artist, playing BIGSOUND in 2019 as well as supporting Violent Soho. Their previous releases SDE, Drunk, Cemeteries & Maximillian have all been played across triple j & triple j unearthed radio, and SDE was added to Spotify’s editorial playlist ‘Local Noise’. Although COVID has hit hard for many, the band aren’t slowing down – Semantics have more releases on the way. They will also be supporting WAAX in their upcoming tour later this year, and playing at some of Brisbane’s first live gigs in August at The Zoo.
