Grace Turner encapsulates the dualities within ourselves through her poetic new single Half Light – also arriving alongside the announcement of her debut EP ‘Half Truths’ landing Friday 7 August.
Written entirely in her head during a crowded walk through the Hunter Region Botanic Gardens with her family, Half Light – which premiered via triple j’s Home & Hosed on June 2 – uses clever wordplay around the word ‘half’ and builds around just one chord the whole way through. It was recorded over a number of sessions beginning at Melbourne’s infamous Sound Park Studios with Timothy Harvey (Lisa Mitchell, Ella Hooper), to a tractor shed in Cessnock NSW (supplied by RAAVE TAPES) and then to Grace‘s drummer Mathew Taylors bedroom studio to lay down the soaring guitar parts that are becoming signature to Turner’s music. Produced by Fletcher Matthews (Sweater Curse, CLEWS) in the final stages bringing the pieces together for a song that; even in its making lives and breathes the collage of ourselves that make up our lives and personalities. The track’s juxtaposing lyrics traverse “the dualities we have within ourselves and the many potentially conflicting parts of the personalities we live with,” says Grace. “it also explores the world of half-truths we live within as a society, I am constantly questioning the world around me and how I fit into it and what makes me who I am”.
Half Light marks Grace’s personal favourite moment from her forthcoming EP and surmises the broader meaning of the record ‘Half Truths’ due in August. The EP watches Grace explore her own unraveling and the richness and deep themes of life with heart and valor. Also featuring gusty single Easy I Fall and breakout track Dead Or Alive, ‘Half Truths’ EP is a seven-track masterclass in folk-rock Americana from the Newcastle native.
This time last year Grace had just wrapped her first international shows in the USA at Austin’s SXSW Festival following a raft of accolades back home including adds to triple j, FBi radio, a triple j Unearthed feature artist spot and hitting #24 in Spotify US’ Viral 50 Playlist. Grace also kept busy on the live front, securing numerous supporting spots with the likes of Alex The Astronaut, Lucy Dacus (USA), Phil Jamieson (Grinspoon), City Calm Down, Kingswood, Ali Barter and more as well as making appearances at Grow Your Own Festival and Groovin The Moo before going into hibernation to finish the EP.
With plans to head out on her debut headline tour later this year, Grace is eager to show the world what she’s been quietly working away on during these uncertain times. One thing is certain though she’s not doing anything by halves – it’s not half-cooked, it’s both light and dark and it’s all-the-way excellent. Stay tuned.
