Since the release of their 2019 debut single All You Want, Brisbane four-piece Patient Lounge have had a monumental year having toured interstate for their first Australian East Coast tour, placed #41 in 4ZZZ’s Hot 100, performed at Dead of Winter Festival, and supported internationally acclaimed acts Haken (UK), Pop Evil (USA) and Wolfmother. With plenty more to come from the inimitable prog-rockers in 2020, Patient Lounge are set to continue “breaking new ground and dismantling stereotypes” (GC Live, 2019) – releasing their second single New Man this Thursday 20 February 2020 and touring to Sydney in March.
Patient Lounge masterfully craft a compelling fusion of classic rock, prog, death metal, jazz and pop influences to offer a fresh spin on Rock/Progressive Rock music; blending intricate instrumentation, dominant vocals and zealous energy to incorporate pop sensibilities in progressive rock/metal tracks.
While All You Want exemplified the distinct variety of Patient Lounge’s evolving pop/rock/prog sound, New Man delivers 7 mins 53 secs of hard-hitting riffs and powerful hooks to showcase the heavier realm of what the band has to offer.
Patient Lounge describe the writing of New Man by saying:“’New Man’ kind of wrote itself; it’s definitely not afraid to be its own thing and explores some really cool musical ideas which we tied together with some heavy riffs and hooks. It’s a great example of what Patient Lounge is all about. We want to make music that people will find just as exciting after 100 listens as after the first, and ‘New Man’ will have people headbanging one second and singing along the next.” With lyrics like “Let’s just sit and watch me burn, watch me waste away” and “When I wake time and time again, I can’t flee this broken man,” New Man is unwavering and formidable. In Patient Lounge’s words:“The song is about rebirth and growing. Sometimes when going through something difficult, you can come out the other side a different person. As painful as that journey can sometimes be, we think it’s how the best growing is done.”
New Man was engineered by Bernie Wedrat (Chris Lord-Alge, Tom Lord-Alge, Michael Brauer) at Lush Recording Studios (Wish For Wings, The Butterfly Effect, Major Leagues) and mastered by Ted Jensen (Billy Joel, Green Day, Mastodon), with music by Patient Lounge and lyrics by vocalist/guitarist Zach Eather.
With impassioned live sets a staple for the band, Patient Lounge have recorded New Man to embody this live performance intensity:“We wanted to keep it as naturally-sounding as possible, so we stayed away from heavy use of quantising and editing takes. The idea was to capture as close to our live sound as possible – we want people to feel like they’re at a gig with us, not listening to a computer play the song.”
Patient Lounge have showcased this live energy with entertaining stage presence and raw charm at acclaimed Brisbane venues including The Triffid, The Zoo, Woolly Mammoth, Crowbar and Black Bear Lodge; and at interstate staples such as Frankie’s Pizza By The Slice (Sydney) and Bombay Rock (Melbourne). They have supported internationally acclaimed acts Haken (UK), Pop Evil (USA) and Wolfmother; performed at Dead of Winter Festival 2019 alongside COG and Disentomb; and have shared the stage with bands such as Osaka Punch, Smoking Martha, Mass Sky Raid, He Danced Ivy and Flynn Effect.
Patient Lounge will be launching New Man with a Brisbane Single Launch on Saturday 22 February 2020 at Woolly Mammoth, and will be returning to Sydney for two shows Friday 6 and Saturday 7 March 2020 (more information below).
