Brisbane Unites: Bushfire Fundraiser – Q&A Series – James Wassenaar -RHINO

Brisbane Unites Bushfire Fundraiser – The Mansfield Tavern – Saturday April 18

With our beautiful country burning before us, there has been a whirlwind of fundraiser shows popping up all over the country. There is nothing like live music to bring people together for a good cause. Brisbane has had its share of fundraiser gigs and there is more to come! Good Call Live are in full support of all these wonderful events, but one that is particularly close to our hearts is the Brisbane Unites Bushfire Fundraiser being held at The Mansfield Tavern on Saturday April 18.

All money raised from this special event will go to charity and one that is really important to the event organisers is the Bushfire Trauma/Mental Health Support gofundme set up by Magda Szubanski and Will Connolly. For more details on this and to donate now, click the donate button below.

Brisbane Unites features 28 bands from Brisbane and surrounds all banding together to raise funds for those affected by the horrendous and relentless bushfires. Over the next few weeks we will bring you a series of Q&A’s with some of the bands on the line up.

In this edition, we have guitarist, James Wassenaar of Brisbane riff masters, RHINO! The guys have recently finished tracking their second single with their producer/engineer Lucius Borich, with the plan to have that out by mid year. They have also been lucky enough to support Cog twice in December and Wolfmother earlier this month.

Personally, I would never stand in the way of a stampeding rhino, so either join the charge or move outta’ the way; RHINO are charging ahead and have been since their inception. Check out their track Afterlife via the YouTube link at the end of the article and catch them at Brisbane Unites!

Brisbane Unites – Bushfire Fundraiser is a pretty special event, not only is it for a good cause but the line up is a showcase of some of the amazing musical talent we have here in Brisbane. How does it feel to be a part of it?

Really stoked! Awesome lineup! Not only are we going to hear some proper rock n roll it will be a great chance for all the bands to mingle, hang out and basically network, it will be like an original bands mini rock’n’roll convention which is really cool!

The event is being held at the iconic Mansfield Tavern. The venue has been huge for live music over the years and has hosted some huge names such as Violent Soho, Wolfmother, Grinspoon, The Offspring, No Doubt, Hunters & Collectors, Madness, Hoodoo Gurus, Skyhooks, The Angels, The Cult and the list goes on! It is great to see some live music happening there again! How do you feel about playing the venue? What does the venue mean to you?

Yeah really excited! Great to be playing on a stage that’s housed so many cool bands. I’ve personally never played there but I know they have a great PA and I’m sure it’s going to sound huge!

Music is one of the most wonderful ways to unite people, what does music mean to you? How important is it to use music as a platform to help those in need at a time like this?

Yeah music means everything to me, always has. There are always songs out there that when you hear it, it transports you to a time and place in your life in seconds. Music can make you pissed off, sad, happy, angry or just make you not think about problems you have in life. I remember once listening to Bulls On Parade by Rage in the car and I got a speeding fine cause it just got me pumped! Sometimes if you are in the shit picking up a guitar and just strumming away is the best medicine for it, much better than a drink, a line, a puff; so yeah powerful stuff. And the fact that it unites us for a great reason is just phenomenal!

The line up for Brisbane Unites is absolutely full of talent. If you had to pick just one band to give a shout out and a plug too, who would it be and why?

Probably the lads from Zero1Zero. They are some of Brisbane’s coolest cats, and Pete (the guitarist’s) riffage is just apocalyptic! Hmmmm might have to steal a riff from him or two and add it to the Rhino roster!!

What would you say to someone to encourage them to come along to this event to support the bands, the venue and the cause?

I’d say come along for sure!!! So many people saying rock is dead buts that’s bullshit, rock will never die. There is nothing more satisfying than hearing a live drummer, some Marshall’s, fat bass and a great singer! Just because it’s not in the spotlight doesn’t mean it’s dead, so come along and get your head blown off to some some riffage and anger from some seriously talented musicians in Brisbane!! Obviously a great cause, so no brainer from me!
