Following up from her latest single Bring It All Back, Leanne Tennant is set to build on the success of recent years with the release of Everspin on 20 February. She’ll be launching the new single at The Junk Bar in Brisbane on the 27th of February & HOTA on the Gold Coast on the 29th. Tennant received two Queensland Music Awards in the ‘Blues & Roots’ category, in 2017 for Gentle Annie and in 2015 for Bearing The Crown. Continuing the momentum, Tennant was a semi finalist in the International Songwriting Competition in 2019, also being nominated for a third QMA.
Having won the prestigious Carol Lloyd Award in 2018, Leanne headed into the studio to record her third album, resulting in the first two singles Cherry Cola and Bring It All Back, subsequently gaining a slew of accolades, including being added to Double J, producers pick on BBC, 4zzz’s best new arrivals, and multiple spins on Triple J. Leanne was also featured on RAGE’S Wild Ones, nominated for the Grant McLennan Fellowship and is set to be played on all British Airways flights from February 2020. Bring It All Back has also been nominated for two Qld Music Awards in 2020.
‘Everspin’ was recorded and produced by Yanto Browning (Amy Shark, The Belligerents) at Airlock Studios in Brisbane with the help of Mark Anthony Maher, aka Kram, from iconic Australian Rock act Spiderbait. The track was born at the end of a long tour, when an exhausted Leanne Tennant walked into Sydney’s Chinatown Mall and sat with her headphones on, explaining “I felt very still, deflated and happy at the same time, watching the busy world spin by”. She began writing lyrics to capture her complicated emotions and that became Everspin, the third extraordinary single previewing her forthcoming album.
Recorded live in one day, Everspin serves as a testament to Leanne’s uninhibited songwriting and natural ability as a performer. A warm, rolling bassline, plucky guitar and tight percussion, courtesy of Spiderbait’s Kram, set the stage for Leanne’s ever-impressive vocals that sit sweetly in the highly articulate mix. The melancholic lyrics are delivered with a cool conviction, providing a perfect balance to keep the tone uplifting and resulting in a song listeners can truly empathize with. “Everspin is about being stuck in a blur of activity yet you still appear to be standing still”, says Leanne, “It’s about putting in all your efforts to be seen and heard yet those efforts continue to go unnoticed. Stuck in the noise. It was inspired by how I was feeling at the time about the music industry and how difficult it is to earn a living as an artist.”
Having been born in Ellesmere Port, England, Leanne and her family relocated to Papua New Guinea a small child before settling in Australia in the 90’s. Her parents enjoyed music, exposing Leanne to the music of Phil Collins, Paul Simon, Bob Marley and the Beatles. After moving to Australia – Leanne started cutting her teeth on guitar and found her obsession was writing her own music. Since then, Leanne has toured sell-out shows and landed coveted festival appearances at BIGSOUND, Woodford Folk Festival, Commonwealth Games and Port Fairy Folk Festival. Her albums have received support from radio across Australia and across the globe, ZUUS Media (US), BBC Radio (UK), KCR (California) and Atrefaktor (Mexico).
