Hayley Mary shares her second single Like A Woman Should off her debut EP ‘The Piss, The Perfume’ – out Friday 17 January.
Following on from her debut single The Piss, The Perfume and follow up track Ordinary Me, Like A Woman Should sees Hayley further stretch her songwriting wings and showcases her exceptional diversity as an artist.
Like A Woman Should continues the contradiction of attitudes explored in The Piss, The Perfume – which masterfully juxtaposes irony and optimism – this time masking a heartfelt love song behind wistful egalitarian social commentary.
On what is perhaps her most upbeat and danceable song yet, Hayley sings about a world in which she feels safe in her own body and comfortable walking down the street, yet the underlying message is a reassuring expression of love; “And I’d be walking home to you/Yeah I’d be walking home to you.”
“I wrote this one evening while living in Edinburgh while sipping a red wine in the middle of winter. I’d been on my own for a while as my partner was away and the chorus just came to me. I think of it a little bit as a reflection on the zone where insecurity clashes with romance; or harsh realities meet idealism. Perhaps it’s an expression of my hope that the latter will win in the end.” – Hayley Mary
Hayley’s debut single The Piss, The Perfume premiered via triple j and Flood Magazine in the US, saw immediate support from Spotify and Apple Music both locally and globally, and has been picked up by The 405, Paste Magazine, DIY Mag, The Line Of Best Fit and Idolator. Her follow up track Ordinary Me premiered on NME and has been added to rotation on FBi, Rage and 2SER, with additional coverage from CLASH, Idolator and Paste Magazine.
