Hugo Stranger & The Rattlers Start Off The Year ‘By Your Side’ with Debut Single

Words by Shannon-Lee Sloane – The Colourful Writer

Brisbane’s uniquely self described spaghetti western/surf rock band, Hugo Stranger & The Rattlers have rolled on into 2020 with style, releasing their debut single and music video, By Your Side

The song itself is fun, a sing a long kind of tune, reminding me of something from a simpler time in music; taking me back to the original rock and roll era of the 1940’s and 50’s. It’s easy to listen to and for some reason makes me want to don a frilly apron and bake muffins while dancing around the kitchen with a permanent smile on my face. Now that could just be my take on it, best you listen for yourself and see where it takes you…

The music video is inspired by the 2007 comedy/drama film starring Ryan Gosling, ‘Lars and the Real Girl’. It’s a funny clip with a little twist at the end that you’ll be expecting if you’re familiar with the film. Partially filmed at one of my favourite local live music venues, The Bearded Lady at West End. The perfect venue to use. The video, a perfect accompaniment to the song.

Every year I discover new bands and my first discovery for 2020 is Hugo Stranger & The Rattlers and this makes me so incredibly happy. Not only do I love them and their sound, but I love that they are a local Brisbane band. Our musical talent here seems limitless. The talent in this band is boundless. Oh and I am totally kicking myself for not discovering these guys sooner, but hey, they’ve got a true fan in me now.

I can’t wait for more releases from Hugo and his Rattlers and I highly recommend you check them out and follow them on their socials to stay up to date with all their news. Unfortunately this article comes after the official single release show which was held at The Beardo on Jan 5. From all reports, it was a great success and looked like a jolly good time. Bring on the next gig guys, I’m keen!

Taken from the bands impressum on their Facebook page: ‘These songs are small I know but they aren’t yours they are my own.’ – a nod to Jewel? I love it.
