One of my most favourite local bands, Fox N Firkin played their first Crowbar gig last Wednesday night and I was so crazy excited to see them play at one of my favourite live music venues. There is something about the energy of the small stage and the floor that the soles of your shoes stick too at Crowbar that will never change no matter how big they get or how much the venue evolves. Seeing Fox N Firkin play there was a highlight of my local live music gig going year.
A quiet Wednesday night quickly turned into a punk rock fest for the ears with Fox N Firkin kicking the night off in their usual energetic manner, the guys got the vibe going with their fun Celtic punk rock sound. These guys have been pumping out the goods since 2012 and they always deliver a tight set playing all their feel good tunes. Starting the set with ‘Bastard Brigade’ a track from their album ‘No Vacancy’ that they have recently made a film clip for (check it out on YouTube!) and ending with my personal favourite ‘Drink The Lot’. Their album was released through Folk Till Ya Punk Records last year and has been on high rotation on my playlist since I purchased it earlier this year. Do yourself a favour and get yourself a copy. The guys are heading off to NSW next week to play some gigs in Sydney, then Canberra and Newcastle. They play one last Brisbane gig for the year on December 9th at New Globe Theatre as part of the Nevermind the Warped Tour. A long list of other local awesome bands and musicians will be joining them and it will be totally worth going so check it out if you can!
Everyone’s favourties, Flangipanis were up next and as always gave us a great set, full of energetic, fun filled, jump around the place songs that never fail to get the crowds pumping. Flange are always a good time with Jodie fronting the band, how could they not be? Jodie was born to perform and you can tell she is in her happy place when she is on the stage surrounded by her band mates and belting out their top tunes. Flangipanis seem to be always on the go, always gigging and supporting an awesome list of bands. I was stoked to catch them supporting Frenzal Rhomb earlier this year at The Triffid and even got to have a cider with Jodie while we jumped around to Frenzal during their awesome set that night. Flange play with The Clowns at Crowbar on December 31st for what will be one of the best New Years Eve gigs in Brisbane and they are up for a big one in 2018 with a tour of Japan to kick off their year. Flangipanis new song, ‘Fuck You and Your Stupid Party’ is out now and you can check it out on their bandcamp.
Dan and Joe from the classic 80’s American punk rock band, The Dead Milkmen were the headliners for the night, with Robbie from Fox N Firkin joining them on drums. Robbie played with them so well it was as though he had done so many times before; when in reality he had only joined them once, which was the night before at their Gold Coast gig. The guys seemed to love every minute on the stage and played a large range of songs from the entire catalogue including all their big hits and fan favourites. True fans of the band would have been extremely happy with this set. It was awesome to see and chat too some older diehard fans of the Dead Milkmen as well as some much younger fans who clearly have great taste in old school punk rock.
